What began as a routine traffic stop escalated dramatically Tuesday night, with a Bradenton police officer becoming trapped between a driver and his dashboard.
Officer Shane Sharp pulled over 19-year-old Lenny Macias-Rangel just after 11:30 p.m. for a reported traffic violation on Martin Luther King Avenue E at 12th Street E.
Officer Sharp reported following Macias-Rangel’s vehicle for several blocks before the teen finally pulled over.
Video footage captures Officer Sharp approaching the driver’s side window to question why he had not stopped sooner.
“I did stop!” the teen protests. “Sir, I’m scared. I don’t even know what I did.”
Officer Sharp can be heard asking Macias-Rangel to turn off the car a total of 12 times, expressing concern that he might flee.
When Macias-Rangel refused, Officer Sharp opened the driver’s side door and reached to shift the car into park, according to a statement from the Bradenton Police Department.
Macias-Rangel continued to scream, “Stop, you’re killing me! You’re killing me!” as the struggle ensued.
As another officer arrived to assist, video footage shows Macias-Rangel accelerating, pinning Officer Sharp against the dashboard.
The car traveled about 150 feet before crashing into a pole.
Macias-Rangel struggled with officers as they extracted him from the vehicle to arrest him, reportedly striking several officers in the process.
Following an evaluation for his injuries, Macias-Rangel was taken to the Manatee County Jail.
Officer Sharp was rushed to the hospital, suffering a concussion, a separated shoulder, and various arm and leg injuries, but he was released on Wednesday morning.
Police discovered over a kilogram of marijuana and 62 THC vape cartridges during a search of Macias-Rangel’s vehicle.
Macias-Rangel has been charged with:
- Two counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer
- Four counts of battery on a law enforcement officer
- Resisting an officer with violence
- Fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer
- Possession with intent to sell, manufacture, or deliver a controlled substance
- Driving with a suspended license
According to police records, Macias-Rangel has previous charges including domestic battery, leaving the scene of a crash, and fleeing from an officer.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Officer Sharp has been with the Bradenton Police Department since 2020 and is a patrol officer as well as a member of the SWAT Team.
