Two arrested in Sarasota after being accused of child neglect

A man and a woman were arrested in Sarasota after being accused of child neglect following a welfare check. On Sept. 5, just after 1:30 p.m., Sarasota police officers and the Florida Department of Children and Families conducted a welfare check on a 5-year-old child.
When officers arrived, they found Crystal Kates, 37, and Torrance Boles, 50, under a tent consuming alcohol, with the child absent. Inside their home, authorities discovered the child alone, confined in a room with a baby gate barring the door.
The child’s hair was dirty and tangled with food debris, and she was wearing a heavily soiled pull-up diaper. She was also unable to articulate any words. Investigators reported finding dirty mattresses on the floor with minimal bedding. The home was cluttered, featuring an empty dresser and no clean clothes in the closet.
Drug tests administered to Kates and Boles revealed the presence of THC, cocaine, and alcohol. Initial statements from Kates indicated that the home was disorganized due to a recent move, but she later admitted they had lived there for over a decade. The Florida Department of Children and Families determined that conditions in both the residence and regarding the child were severe enough to warrant immediate action, removing her and placing her with a relative in Manatee County.
On Sept. 11, both Kates and Boles were arrested and booked into Sarasota County Jail. Kates’ bond was set at $30,000, with mandates for random drug testing and no contact with her child or Boles. Boles’ bond was higher at $40,000, requiring similar testing and restrictions.
The Sarasota Police Department, in coordination with the Florida Department of Children and Families, is continuing to investigate the case. Those with relevant information are encouraged to contact Detective Angela Cox at 941-263-6075.
