Investigators say the teens were attempting to rob a drug dealer when shots were fired.
BRADENTON, Fla. — Three teens have been charged with murder following the shooting death of 15-year-old Kayvon Dunbar last month in Bradenton. The tragic event occurred during an attempted robbery.
The incident took place around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 on 11th Avenue E near 3rd Street E. Authorities discovered Dunbar deceased from a gunshot wound.
Investigators revealed that Dunbar was accompanied by 18-year-old Jeremiah Lilly, a 17-year-old, and a 15-year-old at the time. They had invited a man, the drug dealer of the 17-year-old, to the location with the intention of robbing him.
Upon the dealer’s arrival, the 17-year-old initiated a distraction by approaching the man’s vehicle. However, the dealer noticed the three teens approaching, all wearing masks.
Reports indicate that two of the masked teens were armed. Police state that “the dealer fired toward the suspects in self-defense, and one suspect returned fire,” leading to the tragic outcome.
Dunbar was fatally shot during this exchange. As a result, 18-year-old Jeremiah Lilly, the 17-year-old, and the 15-year-old face charges of felony murder, as Dunbar’s death occurred during their attempted armed robbery.
The state attorney’s office will decide if the 17-year-old and 15-year-old will face charges as adults.
