VENICE, Fla. — A tragic drowning incident occurred at Venice Beach on July 26, resulting in the death of a Texas man. City officials report that a call regarding the drowning came in shortly before 11 a.m., prompting a swift response from the Venice Police and Fire Rescue departments.
The victim, identified as 47-year-old Wesley Wilcox, was pulled from the water by several beachgoers. At the time of the incident, Wilcox, who held a Texas driver’s license, was reportedly alone.
Witnesses indicated that Wilcox set a bag down on the sand before he entered the water. He was later found face-down near the shoreline by other beach visitors, who immediately attempted to assist him. Despite the efforts of Sarasota County lifeguards and Venice Fire Rescue paramedics to perform lifesaving measures, they were ultimately unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities discovered car keys belonging to an unknown Toyota vehicle in Wilcox’s possession. Following an extensive search of the area, the vehicle was located. Currently, the reasons behind Wilcox’s drowning are still unclear, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Next of kin has been notified.
