VENICE, Fla. (WFLA) — Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident of a man who was seen walking into the water at Venice Beach. He was later discovered lying face-down near the shore.
The Venice Police Department reported that officers and fire rescue units were dispatched to the beach shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday, following reports of a possible drowning.
Wesley Wilcox, a 47-year-old man, was observed by witnesses walking towards the water after placing a bag on the sand. At that time, he appeared to be alone.
Shortly thereafter, beachgoers noticed him face-down in the water near the shoreline and quickly pulled him onto the sand. Lifeguards and first responders arrived and attempted lifesaving measures, but Wilcox was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities identified him through his Texas driver’s license and car keys, which were located nearby along with his vehicle.
The cause of Wilcox’s drowning remains unclear, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is ongoing, according to police.
