Republican National Committeewoman Kathleen King fondly recalls her first encounter with Joe Gruters during her twenties as a campaign staffer.
Fast forward two decades, and King was on stage in Atlanta to nominate Gruters to chair the national party.
“It’s pretty neat. It’s incredible,” she remarked. “But we’ve worked hard for it.”
Gruters began his political journey at 20, initially losing to Democratic state Rep. Shirley Brown in a heavily Democratic era. Their paths crossed again when Gruters served as campaign treasurer for now-U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan in his inaugural Congressional race, which was won by just 369 votes.
As King took on the role of Chair of the Manatee County Republican Party, Gruters served as Chair of the Republican Party of Sarasota. Their collaboration on regional races significantly contributed to the shift of both counties toward Republican dominance.
Ultimately, King became the longest-serving county GOP Chair in state history, while Gruters assumed the role of Republican Party of Florida State Chair. Today, both are Florida’s National Committee members.
Their ascent reflects Florida’s transformation from a purple state to a distinctly red state.
“He’s relentless, but I think he’s reliable. He always shows up,” King commented on Gruters’ work ethic. “His philosophy is never to be outworked.”
In Sarasota, Gruters transitioned from leading the county party to closely collaborating with Jack Brill, his successor at the Republican Party of Sarasota.
In a statement, Brill expressed enthusiasm for Gruters’ elevation to RNC Chair.
“Joe’s election is a win for the Republican Party and for America. He was a warrior for President (Donald) Trump from the very beginning, and he will bring the same winning formula that turned Florida deep red, and Sarasota County even redder, to the rest of the nation,” Brill remarked.
“We are thrilled to support him and look forward to working nationally to enact the Trump agenda and make America great again.”
Danielle Alvarez, a political consultant based in Florida, has known Gruters since around 2010.
“During my first event, we were up until 2 or 3 in the morning setting up an office in Sarasota. It’s that work ethic that has propelled Joe’s success,” Alvarez recounted.
She emphasized the importance of Gruters’ experience in Florida’s political landscape as a model for national efforts.
“Florida’s capability in voter engagement reflects the talent we recruit and our strategies,” Alvarez noted. “Joe Gruters is key to that success.”
Gruters was an early supporter of Trump, but King points out that this wasn’t his only bold political maneuver.
He organized events for Rick Scott during his first gubernatorial run, defying the state’s political establishment. Scott ultimately served two terms as Governor and later unseated Democratic U.S. Senator Bill Nelson in 2018.
“Gruters is a risk-taker,” King stated. “He doesn’t play it safe with endorsements, but there’s always a strategic aspect behind his choices.”
