Deputies reported that Patel went missing around 7 p.m. on Sunday while swimming approximately 100 yards offshore in the Gulf of Mexico with another man. Bystanders managed to rescue one individual, while Patel was taken away by the tide.
Patel’s body was located on Monday west of Anna Maria Island, according to the sheriff’s office. The US Coast Guard reported that he was found about a mile offshore after extensive air and sea searches covering around 172 square miles.
“We offer our sincere condolences to Mr. Patel’s family and friends,” noted Cmdr. Fredrick Pugh, a Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg search and rescue mission coordinator. “We thank all the search and rescue crews who worked with determination around the clock with hopes of a different outcome.”
A variety of agencies participated in the search, including the Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Coast Guard Station Cortez, Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg, Palmetto Police Department, North River Fire District, Holmes Beach Police Department, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, West Manatee Fire and Rescue District, Longboat Key Police Department, Longboat Key Fire Rescue, and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
Details remain limited; however, it is believed to be the body of the man who went missing swimming off Bean Point on Sunday, the sheriff confirmed. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office initiated a multi-agency search at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday following reports of two men swimming offshore.

Authorities noted that while one man was rescued, the other was taken by the tide. The investigation is ongoing, as officials work to positively identify the deceased and notify the next of kin.
ABC7 reporters in the area spoke to local residents about the dangers of the waters off Bean Point. One resident, Michael Straugh, remarked he had noticed the current becoming stronger and now keeps his children away from that part of the beach.
The Coast Guard confirmed that the swimmer was reported missing around 7 p.m. on Sunday. Currently, no additional details are available.
