PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (WFLA) — A tragic fire at the Chabad of Charlotte County synagogue in Punta Gorda is being investigated as a hate crime, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred late Friday night on West Henry Street.
Firefighters from Punta Gorda Fire Rescue responded swiftly and managed to extinguish the flames with no injuries reported among civilians or first responders. The fire primarily damaged a classroom used for online children’s classes. Additionally, the perpetrator vandalized the site by spray-painting the letter “J” around the building.
On Saturday, the Punta Gorda Police Department announced that the fire would be treated as “criminal in nature” based on evidence discovered at the scene. Chabad of Charlotte County described the event as an “antisemitic act of arson” and shared their sentiments in a public statement.
Rabbi Simon and Sheina Jacobson emphasized resilience in light of the incident, stating, “As we approach Rosh Hashanah, a time of renewal, reflection, and hope, let this moment remind us of our collective strength. This act of hate will not define us or deter us—it will only strengthen our resolve. We will continue to build, to gather, to celebrate, and to spread light.”
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins Monday evening at sundown. Despite the incident, Chabad of Charlotte County affirmed that it will remain open for services and will enhance security measures.
