SeaPort Manatee Adds New Security Checkpoints

Date:

SeaPort Manatee in Manatee County has enhanced its security infrastructure with the installation of solar-powered mobile security booths.

The acquisition of these booths was made possible through a state grant after the previous booths were destroyed by Hurricane Milton in October 2024, as reported by Virginia Zimmerman, a spokesperson for the Manatee County Port Authority.

On October 14, Governor Ron DeSantis awarded the port a $3.5 million grant aimed at improving security and access control systems within the port, according to Zimmerman.

“The new booths were purchased as part of this broader replacement of security infrastructure,” Zimmerman notes in an email to the Business Observer.

Details about the cost of the new booths were not disclosed.

Equipped with air conditioning and a backup generator, each booth is designed to keep security personnel operational regardless of weather conditions.

These security booths have been strategically positioned around the port to oversee ship operations and daily activities.

“Due to robust federal regulations, the port is responsible for controlling access and monitoring operations,” Zimmerman explains. “The new booths provide flexibility to position them where they are most needed, enhancing security while allowing truck drivers efficient, controlled access to cargo areas.”

Notably, SeaPort Manatee is the closest U.S. seaport to the Panama Canal and boasts ten deep-draft berths. The port significantly influences the local economy, generating nearly $7.3 billion annually and supporting 42,000 direct and indirect jobs. Moreover, it operates independently without local property tax assistance. In fiscal year 2024, SeaPort Manatee achieved a record cargo volume, handling 11.8 million tons, a 7% increase from the previous year.
