SARASOTA, Fla. (WSNN) — A vibrant rainbow-colored crosswalk in downtown Sarasota may face removal following a recent memo from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which expresses concerns over public roadway artwork.
Situated at the intersection of Cocoanut Avenue and Pineapple Street, this artwork has served as a significant emblem of LGBTQ+ pride and visibility within the community. However, in June, FDOT issued guidance instructing local municipalities to eliminate street art that conveys “social, political, or ideological messages,” citing potential distractions for drivers as the primary concern.
While FDOT has yet to confirm whether Sarasota’s rainbow crosswalk is slated for removal, advocates for LGBTQ+ rights argue that this directive jeopardizes public art initiatives.
“Pressuring cities and counties into removing street art is — without a doubt — political pandering,” stated Joe Saunders from Equality Florida.
Though FDOT claims that its policy is primarily aimed at safety, advocates like Saunders argue that it is both unnecessary and counterproductive. He pointed out, “As you approach the crosswalk and notice something distinctive, you’re likely to slow down and become more aware. This actually promotes public safety while showcasing a moderate diversity.”
The city of Sarasota has identified three art installations that might not align with FDOT standards and could be removed:
- Crosswalk art at Cocoanut Avenue, Pineapple Avenue, and 2nd Street.
- Crosswalk art at 1400 Main Street.
- Sidewalk art along Pineapple Avenue and Orange Avenue (east and west sides).
City officials are currently investigating the origins of these installations and what actions, if any, need to be taken.
FDOT has warned that non-compliance with its directive could result in fines or the loss of state transportation funding. Saunders is urging local leaders not to acquiesce.
“City officials must stand firm and resist this pressure,” he emphasized. “You have the authority to shape the culture and identity of your city, and that culture must represent LGBT residents.”
SNN has reached out to the Florida Department of Transportation for information on whether any traffic incidents have been connected to rainbow crosswalks or similar art installations, but the agency has not yet responded.
