Hart’s Landing: A Community Jewel in Ruins

SARASOTA, Fla. — Hart’s Landing, a cherished fishing and waterfront location in Sarasota, is still grappling with heavy damage nearly a year following a hurricane’s devastation.

The bait shop faces imminent demolition, while the piers lie broken and unusable, a stark reminder of the storm’s impact.

Although funding for reconstruction is not yet in place, a spokesperson for the City of Sarasota indicates that local, state, and federal agencies are collaborating on plans to restore the site.

“It’s heartbreaking and infuriating that it’s going so slow,” expressed Sherman Baldwin, the operator of Hart’s Landing. “I’m not blaming anyone, but the process is holding things up.”

Baldwin estimates that reopening could take up to five years or may not occur at all. However, he remains optimistic about the future.

“I do think people in the community want this back,” he noted. “And since public sentiment supports a rebuild, I believe we will get there.”
