Sarasota’s large and tall clothing store to close its doors after almost 50 years.

Date:

After nearly 50 years of service, King James Big & Tall, a staple in Sarasota’s retail scene, will close its doors by the end of October. The store has been in operation for 47 years.

Co-owner Ron Hudson shared in an email to the Business Observer that “competition from big box stores and online retailers has made continuing unsustainable.”

The original King James Big & Tall opened in 1978 at the old Snelling Plaza, established by businessman Jim Montoney.

“Mr. Montoney recognized the need for well-fitted clothing for larger men,” Hudson explained. “In those early days, there was minimal competition compared to the current landscape of big box and online retailers.”

Throughout the years, additional King James Big & Tall stores opened in locations such as Fort Myers, Naples, and Orlando. At its peak in 1996, there were twelve stores across Florida, as noted in Montoney’s obituary following his passing in 2021. All other locations have since closed.

The Sarasota flagship moved to its present location at 4333 South Tamiami Trail in 1992. The store is known for brands like Tommy Bahama, Nautica, and Columbia, as well as personalized service, according to Hudson.

Following Jim Montoney’s retirement in 2015, ownership transitioned to his son, Matthew Montoney, and Hudson, who had served as general manager. Both continue to be involved in the business.

“We are sincerely grateful to all our loyal customers over the years,” Hudson remarked. “We cherish the memories and the wonderful relationships we’ve built.”

King James Big & Tall’s closure reflects a broader trend in retail, with various other retailers such as JoAnn and Forever 21 also shutting down stores this year.

A going-out-of-business sale has already commenced at King James Big & Tall and will run through October 25.
