SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Sarasota Police Department recently issued crucial reminders about safe driving during rainy conditions following an incident where a teenager lost control of their vehicle on a slick roadway.
The driver, a 17-year-old, was exiting Sarasota High School when they made a left turn at excessive speed, causing the vehicle to fishtail and collide with other cars in waiting traffic.
Footage released by the police illustrates the sequence of events: the black sedan shifts into the center lane, accelerates quickly, and veers into the left lane before sharply turning into the line of halted vehicles waiting at a traffic signal.
This crash occurred on September 8, at the intersection of US-41 and Bahia Vista Street, resulting in significant traffic disruptions in both directions for several hours while crews cleared the site.
Fortunately, all parties involved sustained only minor injuries; however, the teen received a citation for careless driving. In response to the accident, the Sarasota Police Department highlighted several safety tips for driving in rain and on wet roads: “Slow down, easy on gas/brakes, wipers on, lights on, eyes up, phone down.”
