Sarasota Police Initiate Enhanced Patrols to Safeguard Pedestrians and Bicyclists

The Sarasota Police Department is enhancing its commitment to road safety, particularly for pedestrians and bicyclists. This initiative, supported by new funding, introduces a High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) program aimed at decreasing serious and fatal accidents in the area.

Ranked among the top 25 counties in Florida for pedestrian and bicyclist crashes, Sarasota County recognizes the importance of this initiative in protecting lives. The HVE program prioritizes education, reminding all road users—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians—about the laws that safeguard everyone.

While education is the primary focus, officers may issue warnings or citations as necessary. Selected enforcement locations were determined based on crash statistics and include:

• N. Washington Drive (SR 683): 10th Street to Myrtle Street
• Fruitville Road (SR 780): Lockwood Ridge Road to Midwest Parkway
• S. Tamiami Trail (US 41/SR 45): Arlington Street to Bahia Vista Street
• S. Tamiami Trail (US 41/SR 45): Webber Street to Hibiscus Street
• Central Avenue: Mira Mar Court to 5th Street
• Tuttle Avenue: Belvoir Street to 6th Street
• N. Tamiami Trail (US 41/SR 45): 10th Street to 42nd Street

Safety Tips for Everyone on the Road

• Drivers: Adhere to speed limits, minimize distractions, never drive under the influence, and remain vigilant for pedestrians in intersections and crosswalks.
• Bicyclists: Ride with traffic, obey all traffic laws, and utilize lights and reflectors after dark.
• Pedestrians: Cross at designated intersections or crosswalks, heed walk signals, and wear bright or reflective clothing at night.

The HVE program is funded in collaboration with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the University of North Florida, and the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM).

Through these combined efforts, Sarasota aims to lessen accidents and foster a safer road environment for all.
