After nearly 50 years in business, King James Big & Tall in Sarasota will close its doors at the end of October. The store has served the community since 1978.
Ron Hudson, co-owner of King James Big & Tall, stated, “Competition from big box stores and online retailers has made continuing unsustainable,” reflecting on the challenges faced by local retailers.
The first King James Big & Tall store was established by businessman Jim Montoney at the old Snelling Plaza in Sarasota. Mr. Montoney recognized the need to provide stylish clothing for larger men.
“In the beginning, there was a captive audience — you didn’t have the competition from the big box stores and online that you do now,” Hudson noted, signifying a shift in the retail landscape.
The brand expanded to include multiple locations across Florida, with 12 stores operating by 1996. However, all have since closed following the founder’s death in 2021.
In 1992, the store moved to its current location at 4333 South Tamiami Trail, offering a variety of brands like Tommy Bahama, Nautica, and Columbia, along with personalized customer service.
After Montoney’s retirement in 2015, ownership passed to his son Matthew and Hudson, who continues to be involved with the business.
Hudson expressed gratitude, saying, “We want to sincerely thank each and every one who supported us over the years. We are blessed to have so many wonderful customers and memories.”
King James Big & Tall is not alone in facing these retail challenges; other brands like JoAnn and Forever 21 have also closed their brick-and-mortar stores this year.
A going-out-of-business sale has already commenced, which will continue through October 25.
