Troopers say the bicyclist, a 41-year-old man from North Port, was attempting to cross the travel lanes on U.S. 41 as an SUV was approaching.
NAPLES, Fla. — A Sarasota County man is dead after officials say he was killed in a hit-and-run by an SUV while riding his bicycle in Collier County.
The Florida Highway Patrol reports the incident occurred just before 9 p.m. Sunday when 42-year-old Jelekzey Gamboa Thiele was driving his SUV along U.S. 41 near Guilford Road in Naples.
In a tragic turn of events, the 41-year-old bicyclist from North Port was attempting to cross the lanes on U.S. 41 at the moment the SUV approached, resulting in a collision with the front of the vehicle.
According to FHP, Thiele fled the scene, leaving the bicyclist to succumb to his injuries at the location.
Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of Thiele’s SUV at a nearby apartment complex, where it was noted to have significant damage on the left front and windshield. The vehicle was subsequently impounded by troopers as crucial evidence.
Thiele has since been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death, and he is currently held at the Collier County Jail.
