A generous $350,000 donation from attorney, businessman, and philanthropist Hugh Culverhouse Jr. has ignited a record-setting fundraising effort for Florida Humanities.

Culverhouse’s challenge grant has spurred a remarkable $707,938 in contributions, which will enhance support for museums, libraries, and historical societies throughout Florida. His philanthropic contributions to humanities councils nationwide have now surpassed $1 million, as noted in a recent statement.

Florida Humanities plays a vital role in funding programs such as speaker series, film screenings, walking tours, and book festivals across the state. Specifically, in Sarasota and Manatee counties, the nonprofit has supported initiatives like The Library Foundation for Sarasota County’s book festivals, the Smithsonian traveling exhibit “Voices and Votes,” and Reflections of Manatee, which commemorates the county’s early settlers.

Meanwhile, nationwide funding cuts in federal humanities have resulted in the cancellation of over 1,400 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants and a 65 percent reduction in staff, according to the statement. In response, Culverhouse has made substantial donations of $425,000 to Alabama and $250,000 to Iowa’s humanities programs to help sustain local festivals, preservation projects, and public lectures.

As the chief executive officer of Palmer Ranch Holdings Ltd. in Sarasota, Culverhouse has given more than $73 million to a variety of community causes, including higher education, mental health, and social justice initiatives. He is the son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Hugh Culverhouse.

Established in 1973, Florida Humanities has awarded over $20 million in funding to cultural resources and public programs. Last year alone, it contributed $520,000 to 71 partners, positively impacting nearly 500,000 Floridians across all 67 counties.
