UPDATE: In a press release issued on Thursday, the Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the body has been positively identified as Giovanni Pelletier, based on dental records and forensic testing.

The cause of death remains undetermined, pending toxicology reports. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office indicated there are no indications of foul play.

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Eighteen-year-old Giovanni Pelletier, who went missing while visiting Florida from North Carolina, is believed to be deceased.

Authorities from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office stated that a preliminary identification suggests he was the individual discovered in a retention pond near I-75 and State Route 70 on Friday.

As of Sunday, officials reported that a positive identification had not yet been made due to the body’s “advanced state of decomposition.”

An autopsy was performed, and the medical examiner determined that no foul play or trauma was present. Officials mentioned that the determination of cause of death is still pending a toxicology report and further investigation.

Giovanni’s mother conveyed a message requesting privacy for the family during this difficult time.
