This winter, downtown Sarasota will welcome the brightest young talents of classical music as the Perlman Music Program (PMP) Suncoast relocates its 22nd annual Winter Residency to a more central venue. This move aims to enhance community engagement and accessibility, allowing more individuals to partake in this extraordinary musical experience.
While final rehearsal locations are still being determined, some sessions are confirmed to take place at the First Presbyterian Church of Sarasota.
Founded in 1994 by violinist Toby Perlman (wife of renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman), the Perlman Music Program provides holistic, non-competitive training for exceptionally talented string players aged 12 to 18. After attending the intensive seven-week Summer Music School on Shelter Island, participants continue their musical journey in Sarasota during the winter months.
Lisa Berger, Executive Director of PMP Suncoast, describes the program as “like a camp, but for extremely dedicated musicians. They come here and work very hard, but there’s no competition; nobody is featured over anybody else. We provide them with good, healthy food and lots of recreational activities as well.”
From December 30, 2025, to January 10, 2026, approximately 28 students will engage in individual and group lessons, alongside orchestra and chorus rehearsals. These activities culminate in the highly anticipated PMP Celebration Concert at the Sarasota Opera House on January 10.
Highlights of the Winter Residency include:
- Public‑accessible rehearsals, where audiences can listen to Maestro Perlman coach students, even addressing both the students and the audience directly through a microphone.
- Works in Progress (WIP) recitals, providing a unique opportunity for student soloists to perform with a pianist before a live audience, showcasing their growth and creative processes.
- A rare opportunity for the community to observe these talented musicians’ growth year after year, as many of them return for multiple residencies on their journey to professional careers.
Additional Information
- PMP Suncoast has been hosting the Winter Residency in Sarasota since 2003, collaborating with USF Sarasota–Manatee to unite students from its flagship Summer Music School, Chamber Music Workshop, and Israel Residency.
- Previously held in a performance tent on the USF Sarasota–Manatee campus, events included orchestra and chorus rehearsals, WIP recitals, master classes, culminating in a Celebration Concert at the Sarasota Opera House.
- The new downtown venue—close to various cultural amenities—marks an exciting shift from previous years, increasing accessibility for both locals and visitors.
Bringing the Winter Residency downtown amplifies public access to world-class classical music and fosters cultural enrichment in Sarasota. This is an exceptional opportunity to experience elite musical training, mentorship from renowned artists, and to witness the rise of emerging talent in a community-oriented atmosphere.
