That’s the cost for 10 minutes behind the wheel at T4 Kartplex, an expansive 18-acre racing facility situated off US 41 in Palmetto.
Jake Mottaz, the facility’s owner, describes karting as “the best extreme activity distilled into a bite-sized form,” with karts reaching speeds of 45 mph, which he claims feels like 90 mph to the driver.
T4 Kartplex is not only an exciting experience; it’s also a flourishing business generating over $3 million annually and employing 30 staff members. Mottaz has gained insights into managing growth and making timely business decisions.
Beyond offering recreational karting, T4 Kartplex runs a racing academy and kart dealership, hosting private events and competitions. On race weekends, the venue can draw up to 1,500 spectators daily.
Recently rebranded, T4 Kartplex has reportedly tripled its rental fleet, introduced activities for young children, and is eyeing long-term expansion, according to Mottaz.
Ownership Change
Mottaz, at age 31, took ownership of the track, formerly known as Andersen RacePark, from Daniel Andersen in June 2024. Financial terms were not disclosed. Mottaz had previously acquired the dealership and racing team from Andersen during the pandemic.
Andersen, a New Jersey construction business owner, managed the track since 2007.
“After years managing kart operations, I felt Jake had a wealth of innovative ideas and could take it to the next level,” Andersen shared in an email.
Mottaz began his journey at Andersen’s kart team as a driver at 18 before advancing to team manager.
Upon acquiring the track, Mottaz opted to rename it partly to attract a title sponsor.
T4, the track’s new name, is a model by Tillotson, an Illinois-based go-kart manufacturer now affiliated with the venue.
“They support us financially as our title sponsor and provide equipment,” Mottaz revealed.
The T4 kart, priced around $6,000, is designed for longevity and performance.
Tillotson President Charles Demirjian noted, “We wanted to support Jake, who was instrumental in launching the T4 Series in the U.S.”
Business Model
The business model encompasses several components: an “arrive-and-drive” rental service, a racing academy, an events program, and a dealership.
In 2024, T4 Kartplex achieved around $3.5 million in sales.
“The majority of our revenue comes from rental cars,” Mottaz stated.
The rental experience offers a quick, affordable taste of racing, catering to both casual drivers and aspiring competitors.
The Palmetto facility has expanded its fleet from 12 to 36 go-karts.
Each rental cart, built for durability and safety, costs the business about $12,000.
Serious racers can purchase T4 karts and join the academy, entering competitions at various levels.
Mottaz boasts high competition levels at T4 Kartplex, with races attracting 95 to 130 drivers, in contrast to the previous owner’s typical turnout of 20 to 30 competitors.
The facility also hosts parties and events, with rental costs ranging from $500 to $30,000.
Unique Offering
T4 Kartplex is among just six tracks in Florida with competitive go-kart racing.
Mottaz notes cooperation in scheduling with other tracks to avoid competition.
Recreational drivers can join a biweekly league for $75, providing a taste of competitive racing.
Mottaz emphasizes affordability for those interested in racing, stating, “We offer a racing experience without needing to buy a go-kart.”
The venue hosts a senior league for older racers, highlighting inclusivity.
Now catering to younger kids, T4 Kartplex features a new attraction, the Kid’s Village, where children as young as three can drive electric go-karts.
Plans include expanding this area into a family entertainment zone with various activities.
Revving Up
Until recently, T4 Kartplex only had 12 rental karts; they have since expanded to 36 with a $330,000 investment.
Mottaz states they are seeing improved performance, noting growth over January’s peak season.
A customer-centric approach ensures an enjoyable experience from arrival to racing.
Mottaz and his manager continuously assess operations for optimal efficiency and quality.
The 0.6-mile track in Palmetto is a premier venue for competitive kart racing in Florida.
Future plans may include a second track or expanding the current one.
Ownership of the land remains with Andersen, but Mottaz intends to purchase it eventually, projecting its value will rise from $3.8 million.
Mottaz envisions further enhancing the spectator experience with improvements to both the track and facilities.
“The track is successful now and on the path to becoming something substantial,” he concludes.
