“Outrageous: Venice Rallies After 92-Year-Old Assaulted and Dogs Taken”

At 92, Ballard continues to run Ballard’s Farm Supply in Venice, where she recently faced an alarming incident. On Monday night, she was assaulted by three women in a black Lexus SUV who attempted to steal her beloved puppies.

According to Ballard in an interview with ABC7, she was kicked in the stomach while trying to prevent the theft. The suspects, all in their 20s, had previously visited her store, initially trying to purchase a poodle that Ballard was breeding, but their offer was turned down.

During the attack, Ballard had three puppies stolen: one poodle and two chihuahuas.

Following the incident, local community members flocked to Ballard’s store to show their support. “She is a staple here. She’s been here for 52 years,” remarked Willis Blackwell, a family friend. “There are a lot of people that know her and love her. To come out to someone that doesn’t have a whole lot and take from her, it’s just disgusting.”

Another friend, Donna Blackwell, voiced her outrage, stating that it is unacceptable behavior. She made a social media post appealing for help for Ballard, who has been a cherished part of their lives for decades.

“There were 150 people that knew her and that are looking for this. This just goes to who she is and how precious she is to our community,” Blackwell continued. “I’ve never met someone like her, ever. She’s just amazing. We need to set an example. You don’t treat our elderly this way. There used to be a moral line that you would never do this to an elderly person. Our community is not going to tolerate it. Let’s bring them to justice.”

A report has been filed with the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, and the investigation is currently underway.

Despite these challenges, Ballard is back at work, determined to keep her business running amidst the aftermath of the attack.
