Only two candidates remain in the running for the next superintendent of Manatee County Schools.

On Tuesday morning, board members from the Manatee County School District held a vote to identify the two finalists for the superintendent position.

In a unanimous decision, the finalists are:

• Dr. Laurie Breslin, executive director of Student Support & Family Engagement at the School District of Manatee County
• Dr. Misty Mathis, executive director of Curriculum at the Nassau County School District

School Board Chair Chad Choate discussed with ABC7 how crucial a thorough understanding of Florida’s educational landscape was in their selection process.

The candidates who were eliminated came from outside the state:

• David Adams, director of School Leadership and Improvement at Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland
• Luis B. Solano, deputy superintendent at the Detroit Public Schools Community District

Choate explained that the board members evaluated the candidates based on background checks, prior successes, and social media presence.

When asked whether Breslin, as an internal candidate, might have an advantage, Choate stated, “Just because you’re an internal candidate doesn’t mean you’re a shoo-in to get it or not.” He emphasized the importance of pushing for excellence and innovation in the role, alongside community engagement.

Next week, Breslin and Mathis will proceed to individual interviews with the school board members.

The community will also have a chance to meet the final candidates. A meet-and-greet event will be hosted by the board on Monday, August 18, at 6:15 p.m. at Manatee Technical College, located at 6305 State Road 70 East. This event aims to familiarize the public with the candidates, delve into their backgrounds, and gather community feedback.
