MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Rebuilding Together Greater Florida is on a mission to enhance the safety of Bay area residents’ homes ahead of storm season. This nonprofit organization is collaborating with local roofing companies to install roofs engineered to endure intense storm conditions.
Key Information
- Dozens of homes in Manatee County have already benefited from the initiative.
- The project is ongoing across the Bay area.
One couple from Sarasota shared the positive impacts of receiving a new roof.
“I love it, I love it,” expressed Johnnie Cantrell, his joy evident on his face.
“They’re doing a good job — I love it,” he added, praising the crew that worked on their roof. For the Cantrells, who have owned their home for 25 years, this improvement was once thought impossible.
“It’s just a wonderful thing. And I just thank them, and I thank God for all the blessings, because not everybody can afford it,” remarked his wife, Sheila.
Rebuilding Together Greater Florida has joined forces with Red Ladder Roofing Company to provide fortified roofs for those in need, including the elderly, disabled, and low-income families.
Anthony Baldo, Interim Board President of the organization, noted, “These roofs are proven to reduce storm damage and help families shelter in place.”
With dozens of homes already completed in Manatee County, the nonprofit emphasizes the ongoing need for such initiatives in the area.
Baldo emphasized the community’s vulnerability: “We have many homes that need help. And these types of projects allow us to be proactive.”
The Cantrells had neglected their roof repairs for years but faced urgency following damage from Hurricane Milton.
“Now that it’s coming together, we’ll be safer and won’t face major damage to our ceilings and roof,” Sheila reflected.
While the cost of roof repairs exceeded $16,000, a daunting expense for the family, it was fully covered by Rebuilding Together Greater Florida.
“I’m on disability. In my check, I can barely afford a Coke,” Johnnie shared.
The new roof has not only fortified the Cantrells’ home but also provided them with renewed confidence. They hope the charity will continue its mission, assisting others in preparing for storm season as well.
