BRADENTON, Fla. — Last year, significant cuts to Florida’s arts funding by Gov. Ron DeSantis led to uncertainty in public school arts programs state-wide.
This shift spurred an increase in enrollment at a music academy in Manatee County, as parents began seeking alternative options for their children’s artistic education.

“We had people driving from North Manatee, from South Manatee,” said Whitney Lopez, owner of Premier Music Academy. “I do believe that it has to do with the school systems slashing funding for the arts.”
Lopez noted the 51% increase in enrollment from 2022 to 2025, which led to the academy’s recent expansion.
“The funding being so low for the arts — we’re ready for the boom,” she remarked.
Lily Woodruff, a dedicated student at the academy for six years, has experienced personal growth through music. Now 14, she plays six instruments and credits her proficiency to her faith and passion.
“I love playing piano. It gives me an opportunity to express myself and glorify God through music,” she explained. “I want to get better so I can be a worship singer.”
Woodruff emphasizes the importance of arts in education and looks forward to continuing her musical journey as she enters high school this fall, where she hopes to further expand her knowledge and skills.
Despite the challenges, Florida’s budget for the 2025-26 period has seen some positive changes, with millions restored in arts grants, offering a glimmer of hope for public arts and culture initiatives.
