Maribeth Phillips is actively addressing the rising demand for services.

“We are thrilled to have this additional space,” she expressed.

As the president of Meals on Wheels Plus of Manatee, Phillips is managing the expansion to include a new food bank warehouse.

“It’s a 5,000-square-foot addition. This could not come at a more opportune time,” she noted. “This expansion is positioning us for the future. We are the sole food bank located in Manatee County, and we support 100 pantries and agencies that rely on our services.”

The organization has recently obtained a $2 million donation to facilitate its expansion project, which includes not only the warehouse but also the integration of new technology.

“We’re exploring software solutions to streamline our inventory management and improve data entry,” she added.

According to Phillips, the demand for services continues to rise; since 2021, Meals on Wheels Plus of Manatee has experienced a 40 percent increase in food need within the community.

“We fill the gap between providing food and ensuring individuals can thrive. Our programs are not just life-changing; they are also life-saving,” she said.

The upcoming building will also be crucial during emergency situations.

“Last year during the hurricanes, we had to lease trailers to accommodate the influx of supplies needed for the community, as our current space was insufficient,” Phillips recounted. “This project will guarantee that we have adequate space moving forward.”

She emphasized the importance of this expansion, noting her organization assists thousands each week, with that number steadily increasing.

“I’m genuinely excited that we will be able to fulfill these needs,” she remarked.

With the new warehouse expected to be completed in November, Meals on Wheels Plus of Manatee is still on the lookout for over a million dollars for the expansion project. The nonprofit welcomes donations for those who would like to contribute.
