Manatee County set to choose new superintendent on Tuesday.

BRADENTON, Fla. — The School Board of Manatee County is set to select its next superintendent on Tuesday, marking the district’s fifth superintendent in just twelve years.

The two finalists are Dr. Laurie Breslin, currently part of the Manatee school district, and Dr. Misty Mathis, who has dedicated her career to Nassau County schools. Notably, they both possess similar qualifications and significant experience working with the Florida Department of Education, a critical factor in the board’s selection process.

The previous superintendent, Dr. Jason Wysong, was terminated in May due to complaints from board members regarding issues with communication and leadership style. In light of this, board members have been diligent during the interview process, aiming to select a candidate who would remedy these concerns.

Board Member Richard Tatem posed questions to both candidates about the qualities that constitute a ‘great’ leader. Breslin articulated the importance of respectfully addressing potential errors in thinking, stating, “A great leader understands that is a necessity in leadership.” Mathis echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for team cohesion and critical reflection on decisions.

Tatem continued the dialogue by inquiring about their leadership styles. Breslin noted her personal growth throughout her leadership journey, mentioning that she’s now more confident in engaging in tough conversations to foster growth rather than discourage staff. “It is a skill that you grow as you move through leadership,” Breslin remarked.

Mathis shared insights from her experience in Nassau County, highlighting her focus on shared leadership and collaboration. “I would bring together all the leaders… to make the right decision for our school district,” she asserted.

After the new superintendent is chosen, the district will have two weeks to finalize contract details. The new superintendent’s contract is anticipated to be formalized by September 9.
