Manatee County invites community feedback regarding Cortez Marina.

BRADENTON, Fla. — Manatee County officials are eager to gather feedback from residents regarding the proposed future for the Cortez boat ramp.

Officials are proposing a marina where the Seafood Shack used to be, just north of the Cortez Bridge.

County representatives indicate that the new facility could add up to 25% more boat trailer parking spaces.

Kathe Fannon, a charter captain for over 20 years with Captain Kathe and First Mate Pup-Pup Charters, has deep-rooted connections to the Cortez community.

“In Cortez — my grandfather, my dad, myself, my daughter, and now my granddaughter,” she shared.

Through the years, she has watched the transformation of this historic fishing village, particularly with the demolition of both Annie’s Bait & Tackle and the Seafood Shack.

“I can’t understand why they demolished that,” Fannon remarked. “It represents a piece of Old Florida.”

The county has ambitions for the area.

Plans are in place to create Cortez Marina, envisioned as a “dynamic public boat-launch and waterfront destination.”

“Absolutely,” Fannon agreed. “If a boat ramp is established near us, we will utilize it.”

However, she expresses some concerns.

“I worry about its impact on Cortez,” she stated. “It will definitely change the entire character of this place.”

This is why she is participating in Manatee County’s request for public feedback on the proposal via the recently distributed survey.

“They want to know what facilities and activities you’d like to see at this boat ramp — whether it’s public events, food trucks, or parking,” Fannon explained.

County officials plan to analyze the feedback from residents before moving into the design phase, potentially as soon as next year.

Construction could start in two to three years.

“This topic is truly captivating,” Fannon added. “I’m sure many will read this and have mixed feelings.”

Her primary concern is preserving the essence and history of the Cortez fishing village.

“It holds significant meaning for me,” she expressed. “It’s very dear to my heart.”

As changes unfold, she hopes county officials will focus on maintaining the “Old Florida” charm of the area.
