Manatee County Habitat for Humanity has embarked on an ambitious project, breaking ground for an entire community aimed at assisting families struggling with the challenges of homeownership.

The backstory:

In recent years, Habitat for Humanity has observed a significant surge in the demand for affordable housing.

With the initial groundbreaking at Kings Cross Place, work is now underway to construct a community comprising 27 homes in East Bradenton, providing families with the stability they have long sought.

“When we opened up the application process for this development, we received 250 applicants in just one week. Approximately 150 of those qualified financially for the homes. The need for affordable homeownership continues to be remarkably high in this community,” stated Bernie Quinn, the President and CEO of Manatee County Habitat for Humanity.

The construction of this community is spearheaded by Manatee County Habitat for Humanity, emphasizing the urgent requirement for affordable housing.

What they’re saying:

Quinn elaborated, “We are witnessing hardworking individuals—some balancing two jobs—trapped in unaffordable apartments. They struggle to save money, qualify for loans, or escape the high rents that prevent them from building any equity.”

Once complete, the 3-and 4-bedroom homes will be offered through a zero percent interest mortgage, allowing homeowners to pay between $900 and $1,000 monthly over a span of 30 years.

“This initiative gives them the opportunity to own homes at a significantly lower cost than renting, enhancing their ability to build long-term equity and transform their family’s generational wealth,” said Quinn.

This marks the second such development undertaken by Manatee County Habitat for Humanity.

Stephen Reinfeldt, Vice President of Construction, shared insights: “Currently, we are focusing on laying the infrastructure. We’re installing fencing today, followed by clearing the land and establishing underground utilities and parking.”

What’s next:

By next year, this site will welcome families who once thought homeownership was out of reach.

“Our mission is to provide affordable housing for those in need,” emphasized Reinfeldt.
