MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — As storm season approaches, Manatee County encourages residents to prepare ahead of time by providing increased access to essential resources.
Sandbag locations across the county will remain operational every day until the end of hurricane season, which concludes on November 30. This initiative is part of Manatee County’s proactive strategy for storm preparedness.
“We are securing additional sandbags before a storm so we don’t have to scramble at the last moment,” said Claire Rowell, who filled sandbags at the Rye Preserve with her son, Buck.
Rowell described the improved quality of the sandbags this year, highlighting their effectiveness: “They’re a bit higher quality this year, which is great.” She emphasized how crucial these bags are in protecting homes, especially during intense weather events.
Residents visiting the sandbag sites will find bins filled with empty bags and sand. The only item needed from them is a shovel. Rowell shared her experience of using sandbags to bolster their defenses against flooding, particularly around doorways.
Having lived in Parrish for 13 years with a view of the Manatee River, Rowell recounted how her home was affected during Tropical Storm Debby. “The water flows along our easement toward the front door,” she said, noting that even though the river is far, flooding can still occur near the street and easement. To counter this, her family has added French drains to redirect water away from their home, and the sandbags serve as an additional barrier.
“We want to ensure we have enough to seal our front door in case a storm approaches,” she stated, explaining that the aim is to keep rising waters from entering the house.
Sandbag locations are available until the end of the season.
