Completion of the 44th Avenue East Extension

MANATEE COUNTY, FL (August 4, 2025) — Manatee County has proudly marked the completion of the much-anticipated 44th Avenue East Extension with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. This significant infrastructure accomplishment is set to officially welcome traffic on Saturday, August 9.

“This is a legacy project,” declared Manatee Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) Chair George Kruse. “We are pleased to bring this to completion.”

The roadway project, which unfolded in six major phases over more than ten years, culminates in the addition of nearly two miles of new roadway from east of I-75 to Lena Road. This extension features a newly constructed overpass across Interstate 75, a bridge over the reclaimed lake at the Southeast Water Reclamation Facility, and a modern roundabout at Lena Road. Designed with a forward-thinking approach, the corridor includes four lanes, sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes, multi-use trails, and enhanced lighting.

The roots of this project trace back to the County’s Concept Development Plan of 1968. It was further upheld through the 1989 Comprehensive Plan and made a priority in the Capital Improvement Plans. This journey symbolizes a commitment to community vision, inter-agency collaboration, and persistent investment.

“Now, after years of planning, engineering, and construction, we’re proud to mark the completion of the final piece,” shared Manatee County District 5 Commissioner Dr. Bob McCann.

As crews finalize the last touches in the coming days, drivers will be able to utilize the new roadway just in time for the opening of Manatee County Schools on Monday, August 11. This new thoroughfare is estimated to accommodate approximately 36,000 additional vehicles per day, significantly alleviating traffic congestion on State Road 64 and State Road 70 by around 21,000 vehicles a day.

“This is an entirely new corridor,” commented Public Works Director Chad Butzow. “If you were frustrated with the high volume of traffic on (SR) 64 and (SR) 70, this new option will greatly benefit you.”
