Longboat Key resident elevates her house in preparation for hurricane season

LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. — Elevating a home is one of the most impactful steps a property owner can take to prepare for storm season.

Longboat Key resident Kellie Day experienced the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene, where storm surge flooded her home, prompting her to elevate her property.

The transformation of her home is something Kellie says will take time to adjust to.

“Right now it’s close to 13 feet,” she mentioned, reflecting on the new height.

Regardless of how much the appearance may change, she feels deeply connected to this space. “This place means a lot to us,” she remarked. “It’s our family place. I couldn’t see not saving it.”

Having owned the property since 2020, it’s situated near the water and has endured flooding on five separate occasions. Day recounted, “The worst was during Helene’s storm surge.”

Recognizing the urgency for a change, she initiated construction on April 2.

Now, the house stands higher, yet there’s currently only one access route. “It feels very weird,” she expressed.

This new elevation has offered her a unique perspective on her surroundings. “I’m hopeful, excited, and still nervous,” she confessed, embracing the mix of emotions.

“Once it went up, I was like ‘Thank you, we don’t have to worry about the water,’” she added.

This significant decision will undoubtedly impact Day and her family’s future. “We put blood, sweat, and tears into it,” she stated emotionally. “Our kids have grown up vacationing here on the boat. It means a lot to us, and our families have been here for generations.”

Through the act of lifting her home, Day is optimistic about creating lasting memories for years to come. Despite the ongoing work inside, she remains focused on the positive changes ahead.

Day noted that while the elevation is nearing completion in two weeks, there’s still ongoing interior work.
