Lily Scheip’s lawyers assert that the verdict was fair and no evidence of malicious intent was established.

Date:

Lily Scheip was found guilty late Thursday night of manslaughter, having previously faced charges of second-degree murder. This verdict reflects a significant reduction in potential sentencing, as manslaughter carries a maximum penalty of up to 15 years, while second-degree murder could have resulted in life imprisonment.

During the trial, Scheip’s defense team aimed to establish that there was no malicious intent involved in the death of Dominic Scheip, working diligently to have the charges reduced. Jason Miller, one of Scheip’s attorneys, commented on the verdict, noting the lack of evidence for malicious intent from the prosecution. He stated, “There wasn’t any indication that there was a depraved intent, what the law describes as a heightened level of ill will or evil intent. There was no element there, and what seemed to be described by the state was a negligent act that was still criminal at the same time.”

Despite the reduction in charges and potential sentencing, attorneys involved in the case emphasized that such cases inevitably take an emotional toll. Attorney Bart Stoddard remarked, “It’s the kind of case where emotions are always going to be running high on all sides. We are talking about the death of a child. I mean, there really is no winning in this case. If we get a non-guilty verdict, Dominic is still deceased, and everyone is lesser for it.”

Looking ahead, the next steps include a presentencing investigation, although no date has been confirmed for Scheip’s sentencing.
