Dr. Laurie Breslin has been selected as the new executive director for Student Support and Family Engagement by the School Board, marking a unanimous decision over her competitor, Dr. Misty Mathis, from the Nassau County School District.
Negotiations for her contract are set to begin, with the expectation of a finalized agreement by September 9.
“I am deeply honored by the trust the School Board has placed in me, and I am humbled to serve the community that has shaped me both as a student and an educator,” Breslin expressed after the vote.
“This is my home. It will always be my home. I plan to retire here in Manatee County, so it means a lot to me to see our school district reach its fullest potential,” she added.
While both candidates received praise, Breslin’s four years of experience within the Manatee County School District influenced the board’s decision. Board member Heather Felton acknowledged the challenging choice, stating, “I could see myself working well with either of them. Dr. Breslin edges out Dr. Mathis just a little bit. She knows everyone, and I believe she’d have an easier time transitioning into the role.”

“Dr. Breslin has been a frontrunner for me from the beginning,” board member Charlie Kennedy noted. “She is a positive influence wherever she goes. Her intelligence and empathy stood out; this is a proud night for us.”
“As a former teacher and current board member, I appreciate Dr. Breslin’s perspective,” Heather Felton continued. “She understands the experiences of our families and educators, which will guide her in making thoughtful, student-centered decisions.”
Breslin has an extensive background in education, having served as executive director of Student Support and Family Engagement for the School District of Manatee County, along with roles as a principal, assistant principal, and curriculum director within both Manatee and Sarasota schools.
With over a decade of service in Manatee, she is recognized for her local roots, commitment to transparency, and advocacy for educators.
In contrast, Mathis is the executive director of Curriculum and Instruction for Nassau County Schools, a position she has held since 2021, during which her leadership led to Nassau achieving the top overall ranking in Florida for the 2024–25 school year.
Mathis has earned a reputation for her data-driven initiatives and exceptional academic outcomes, supported by her extensive experience in strategic research and district-wide improvement.
