GUTWRENCHING audio has revealed the horrific moments following a tragic accident where a 5-year-old girl was swept into a storm drain.
Zaria Miller’s grandmother cried out in desperation to a 911 operator, explaining how the water “sucked her under,” but sadly it was too late.
The young girl died in the hospital days after being pulled into a storm drain in Sarasota, Florida.
On Sunday, at approximately 6:30 PM, Zaria was playing with her brothers near a culvert under the supervision of her grandmother.
A sudden water main break exacerbated the already heavy rainfall, creating an intense current that dragged Zaria into the storm drainage system, as per police reports.
In an urgent 911 call, the grandmother, overwhelmed with fear, alerted authorities while witnessing the grim scene unfold.
“She got sucked into the culvert,” she sobbed in audio obtained by The U.S. Sun.
“There’s a water line flowing right out here.” Her anguish was palpable as she recounted the incident.
The frantic grandmother exclaimed, “God, why did we let her swim in there?,” confirming that her granddaughter was trapped in the tunnel.
During the call, bystanders also recognized the urgency of the situation, with one passing pedestrian contacting authorities as chaos ensued.
The heartbreaking sounds of screaming children filled the background of a secondary 911 call, which was determined to be regarding the same incident.
Upon arrival, first responders searched the vicinity, lifting storm grates as they sought the missing girl.
Zaria was eventually discovered approximately 100 yards away, and despite immediate resuscitation efforts, she was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where she later passed away on Thursday.
