BRADENTON BEACH, Fla. (WWSB) – The Bradenton Beach Police are warning the community about an active phone scammer impersonating an officer and demanding payments under the threat of arrest.
Victims report that the individual claimed to be a detective from the department, stating they had missed a court appearance and were required to pay a cash bond to avoid being held in contempt. The caller ID even displayed the legitimate police department’s number.
On July 23, police received five reports from individuals who had been targeted, and they believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
“Regrettably, the individual or individuals behind this scam could be located anywhere,” stated Bradenton Beach Police Lt. Lenard Diaz in a news release. “At this moment, we have no means to track them down. It’s crucial for the public to understand that we will never contact anyone requesting money under any circumstances.”
Diaz advised that if you receive such a call, refrain from interacting with the caller and simply hang up.
After that, please contact the BBPD non-emergency line at 941-778-6311 to report the occurrence.
