Independence Day marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. In this historic document, the 13 original colonies proclaimed their independence from Great Britain.
During the critical summer of 1776, celebratory events honoring King George III’s birthday were replaced with mock funerals as a symbolic gesture of severing ties with the crown.
It was a thrilling time in Philadelphia — the Continental Congress decided to separate from British rule, and just two days later, on July 4, the Declaration of Independence was ratified by the original 13 colonies — New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.
The first annual celebration of national independence occurred in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, amidst the Revolutionary War. Fireworks have been part of July 4 festivities since the inaugural celebration in Philadelphia.
Today, Americans observe the holiday with fireworks, parades, concerts, family gatherings, and barbecues. Notably, these celebrations predate the establishment of Independence Day as a federal holiday, which only occurred in 1941.
