FDOT to Take Down ‘Gulf of Mexico’ Signs on Longboat Key

Date:

LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. — In a recent announcement, officials from Longboat Key confirmed that “Gulf of Mexico” road signs are being taken down from State Road 789. This decision is in accordance with House Bill 549, which mandates the Florida Department of Transportation to eliminate signage within the State Road 789 right-of-way that reference the Gulf of Mexico.

This legislative move stems from a new federal designation that redefines “Gulf of Mexico” as “Gulf of America.” The city clarified that despite the removal of these signs, the formal designation of the roadway will not change; streets named “Gulf of Mexico Drive” will remain unaffected for the time being.

On October 20, the Longboat Key Town Commission plans to address potential renaming options for SR 789 during their workshop meeting. Additionally, the city has made available a question-and-answer page that covers topics including addresses, post office details, emergency services, and the potential costs associated with these changes.
