The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has reported that a man is dead after pointing a gun at deputies while they attempted to serve an arrest warrant.
VENICE, Fla. — This incident occurred around 11 a.m. Wednesday in the vicinity of Golf Club Lane in Venice. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies arrived at a residence to execute an active arrest warrant.
Authorities initially requested that the individual inside the home, identified as 32-year-old Anthony Bottoni, exit the premises; however, he refused to comply.
As a result, deputies forced entry into the residence. It was then that Bottoni armed himself with a firearm, as indicated in a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Officials on the scene moved to the backyard and called for SWAT and the Hostage Negotiation Team to support their efforts.
Shortly thereafter, Bottoni emerged from the house brandishing the firearm. Deputies instructed him to drop the weapon, but he refused, which led to one officer deploying a Taser. The Taser was ineffective in subduing Bottoni, according to the SCSO.
Detectives reported that Bottoni pointed his weapon at law enforcement officials, leaving them with “no option” but to fire at him.
Despite the sheriff’s office’s efforts to perform life-saving measures until the Sarasota County Fire Department arrived, Bottoni was later pronounced dead at the scene.
No deputies sustained injuries during the confrontation, and an investigation is currently ongoing.
