Excerpt from Operation Bad Odds Investigation
Undercover detectives executed “Operation Bad Odds” in collaboration with the state Gaming Control Commission and the Auburndale Police Department.
The investigation was initiated following a tip about gambling machines at A-1 Discount Beverage and Discount & Deli in Auburndale. Upon investigation, undercover detectives discovered the machines concealed in back rooms. They placed bets and successfully won money, which was handed to them in cash by store clerks.
Throughout the probe, 11 stores were identified where illegal gambling was taking place. On September 3, search warrants were executed at all identified locations, leading to the discovery of an additional site during the operation.
In total, 28 individuals were arrested across 12 locations. Authorities confiscated 48 gambling machines, two drink coolers, and also seized two firearms and $100,971 in cash.
The illegal gaming establishments were spread across multiple areas, including Haines City, Lakeland, Winter Haven, Wahneta, Lake Wales, and Bradley Junction. The sheriff’s office reported that five of the suspects are in the country illegally.
Sheriff Grady Judd cautioned that playing on such machines is essentially a “sucker’s bet.” He remarked, “People who gamble on machines like the ones we confiscated are being ripped off,” emphasizing that these machines are not designed for fair play.
He further warned, “It’s a safe bet that you’re going to jail if you illegally gamble or provide the machines to enable others to do so.” Those arrested are facing a variety of charges including maintaining a gambling house, possessing slot machines, and improperly disposing of money through unlawful lotteries.
