MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — The Sarasota Orchestra is set to embark on a transformative journey after receiving the largest donation in its history—a generous $60 million contribution aimed at constructing a new musical center.

Natalie Helm, a principal cellist at the Sarasota Orchestra, plays a remarkable instrument over 200 years old.
“Having a deep bond with your instrument is vital. It’s akin to a Harry Potter wand; it chooses you,” she remarked.
She started her musical journey at a tender age, switching to the cello by age 11.
“Winning my position here in 2016 was one of the happiest moments of my life. Music is my primary form of expression; when words escape me, I turn to my cello,” she shared.

Helm is soon to share her passion on a grander stage.
The Sarasota Orchestra recently secured two donations that combined provide the $60 million gift from an anonymous benefactor intended specifically for a new music center located on Fruitville Road:
“The plan includes a concert hall with 1,800 seats, an educational wing, and a 700-seat recital hall,” explained Joseph McKenna, president and CEO of Sarasota Orchestra. He noted that this initiative comes at a crucial time.
“The need for high-quality acoustical spaces is pressing, as the orchestra currently lacks a dedicated home. This project will provide the acoustic design required for the orchestra to shine, while allowing us to expand our educational programs to serve a growing community,” McKenna further explained.
Helm is excited about the impetus to inspire more individuals.
“This new facility will be a beautiful space that fosters inspiration through music and community engagement,” she said.
It’s a community Helm cherishes, where her centuries-old cello will find its new home.
According to the Sarasota Orchestra, it will take another year to finalize design work. Officials project that construction will begin in early 2027, with the new music center opening in late 2029.
