Black Gold Coffee Roasters to Open New Shop within 60 Days of Building’s Completion

VENICE – Lord-Higel House, the oldest house in Venice that was once envisioned as a museum, is set to become a vibrant coffee shop following the City Council’s unanimous approval of a lease with Black Gold Coffee Roasters.

Black Gold owner Gary Lauters II and General Manager Alyssa Williams emphasized their commitment to honoring the historical significance of both the structure and the city. “Through adaptive reuse, we aim to turn the two-story structure into a thriving café and, most importantly, a gathering place,” said Williams.

In collaboration with the Venice Museum & Archives, they plan to spotlight the area’s rich history.

Frank Wright, president of the Venice Area Historical Society, expressed support for the lease, promising that the society would help promote the coffee shop and host events there. “Their success is our success,” he noted.

Support also came from Larry Humes, former president of Venice Heritage, Inc., who stated in an email to the council: “We believe the owners of Black Gold Coffee will create a venue that serves as a gathering place, while educating citizens about this unique building and its history.”

The Queen Anne Victorian-style building, constructed in 1896 by Sarasota landowner J.H. Lord, was relocated to its current site on Granada Ave. in 2005. The restoration of Lord-Higel House, which saw Venice Heritage raise over $800,000 and countless volunteer hours, reflects the community’s dedication to preserving history.

Details of the lease include $1,000 a month for rent, alongside $200 for utilities. While there is no profit-sharing agreement, the lease allows for 48 months with options for two 24-month renewals, contingent upon improvements to the property. The venue is expected to open within 60 days of the lease signing.

The council also addressed a pension grievance, approving a $14,500 payment to retired Venice Police Lt. Jessica Chappa. This payment resolves issues related to compensatory time affecting her pension calculation.
