SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday when a child drowned following a water main break in Sarasota. The event occurred at the address 5433 Bahia Vista Street, as reported by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
During the water main failure, a small child playing near a culvert was unexpectedly swept into the drainage system due to the powerful flow of water. Witnesses stated that the child was carried through the drain for nearly 100 yards before the emergency services arrived.
The Sarasota County Fire Department responded promptly to the scene, and the child was subsequently transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment. Sadly, the details surrounding the child’s condition remain unclear.
As a result of the incident, Bahia Vista Street has been closed to both east and westbound traffic between Honore Avenue and Arcadia Avenue until further notice.
