SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. — A child was swept into a drain Sunday evening following a water main break in Sarasota County, deputies say.
It happened just before 6:30 p.m. on Bahia Vista Street, where the child was reportedly playing near a culvert. According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), the strong water flow pulled the child into the drainage system.
Deputies say the child was found about 100 yards west on the street after being carried through the drain.
The child was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and is receiving medical attention as of Sunday night, officials say.
According to SCSO, Bahia Vista Street will be closed to eastbound and westbound traffic between Honore Avenue and Arcadia Avenue until further notice. Public Works is on site addressing the water main break.
Authorities are urging drivers to find an alternate route.
