SARASOTA-BRADENTON, FL — Memorial Day weekend is a time to honor our fallen heroes, and Sarasota and Manatee counties offer several meaningful events to pay tribute. Here’s a look at what’s planned in the community:
Where: Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota
At 7:50 a.m., families will honor their loved ones by placing flags, with additional flags being placed starting at 8 a.m.
Where: JD Hamel Park, 199 Bayfront Drive, Sarasota
This annual 5K hike serves as a tribute to our fallen heroes.
When: Monday, 9 a.m.
Where: Don Courtney Veterans’ Monument Park, 176 Waterfront Drive, Bradenton
The park is conveniently located on the Riverwalk behind Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton.
Memorial Day Patriotic Symphony Salute
When: Monday, 10 a.m.
Where: The Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria
This free 90-minute program will feature a flag presentation by the U.S. Marine Corps.
When: Monday, 10 a.m.
Where: The parade begins at Main Street and Osprey Avenue, concluding at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park, located at Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue.
A ceremony featuring guest speaker Sonny Bywaters, a key figure in the formation of the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee, will take place at 11 a.m. at J.D. Hamel Park.
