A 20-year-old man was swept away by the tide on Sunday night while swimming off Bean Point, officials said.
ANNA MARIA, Fla. — Manatee County Sheriff’s deputies have discovered a body in the water just west of Anna Maria Island, believed to be the missing swimmer from the weekend incident.
The search effort, involving multiple agencies, intensified Monday morning after witnesses reported seeing 20-year-old Abhigyan Patel about 100 yards from the beach around 7 p.m. on Sunday in the Gulf off Bean Point. Officials indicated that he was swimming with another man, who was rescued and safely brought to shore by nearby individuals.
An X post from the U.S. Coast Guard noted that Patel was last seen wearing an olive green shirt.
An extensive search operation was initiated by Manatee County deputies, utilizing several boats, jet skis, paddleboards, and aerial support from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Deputies are currently in the process of identifying the recovered man and notifying his family members.
