May is Dedicated to Motorcycle Safety Awareness

TAMPA, Fla. — As temperatures rise, more motorcycle riders are taking to the road. This increase in ridership highlights why May is designated as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

Spectrum News recently visited the Rider Academy at Harley Davidson in Brandon, where a group of students is honing their skills to earn motorcycle endorsements.

According to Riding Academy Manager Tom Holden, the focus for new riders is on mastering slow maneuvering and handling tight quarters. He emphasizes the need for situational awareness: “Being a smart motorcycle rider means paying attention to your environment,” Holden explains. “You convert your reaction time into decision time, by creating space and a buffer around you.”

In addition to riding skills, choosing the right gear is crucial for motorcyclists. Holden advocates for wearing bright, tear-resistant clothing, boots that provide ankle coverage, and, most importantly, helmets.

“You must wear a helmet,” he stresses. “If you hit your head, the consequences can be severe. While half-helmets are acceptable as long as they meet DOT approvals, full-face or modular helmets offer more protection.”

A study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety details the rise in fatalities after Florida changed its helmet law in 2000. The research indicated that in 1,000 motorcycle accidents, fatalities increased from 30 to 38, and riders who don’t wear helmets are 25% more likely to die in an accident.
