VENICE, Fla. (WFLA) — A man is dead following a deputy-involved shooting that took place in Venice on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, at 10:58 a.m., deputies arrived in the 200 block of Golf Club Lane to serve an active warrant.
At the scene, deputies confirmed that the suspect, Anthony Bottoni, 32, was inside the residence and verbally commanded him to exit. However, Bottoni refused to leave the premises, prompting deputies to force their way inside. It was during this breach that Bottoni armed himself with a firearm.
In response, deputies relocated to the backyard and requested backup from the SWAT team and the Hostage Negotiation Team. Moments later, Bottoni exited the residence while still armed.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies ordered Bottoni to drop the firearm, but he refused to comply. When deputies attempted to subdue him with a Taser, Bottoni reportedly pointed his firearm at the officers. In reaction to this threat, deputies employed deadly force.
Bottoni was pronounced dead at the scene, with no other injuries reported.
