Balanchine’s Divertimento No. 15, an audience favorite, revisits the Sarasota stage once again with its intricate moving and shifting of partners set to the tune of Mozart’s score. Created to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, this ballet is known for its delightful complexity. Additionally, inspired by Mozart’s music but featuring Tchaikovsky’s score, Mozartiana joins as a Company Premiere. This piece elegantly showcases the appreciation both Balanchine and Tchaikovsky had for Mozart, beautifully blending the elegance of the music with Balanchine’s refined choreographic style.
To cap off the program, Sir Frederick Ashton’s Jazz Calendar offers a light-hearted conclusion. This witty performance draws inspiration from the nursery rhyme “Monday’s Child” and features a vibrant 1960s jazz flair. Each section of the ballet personifies the days of the week through playful, character-driven choreography and unique visual elements, bringing a cheerful and festive energy to the evening.
