SARASOTA, FL — A young girl who was swept into a storm drain following a water main break is currently in critical condition, according to Fox 13.
While playing near a culvert on Bahia Vista Street, the girl was pulled into the drainage system by the rushing water around 6:15 p.m., as reported by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
Emergency responders located the child approximately 100 yards west on Bahia Vista Street after she had been carried through the drain.
Search efforts ended when she was found in a wooded retention area across from Sarasota Christian School, as detailed by the Tampa Bay Times.
She was quickly transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for medical attention.
The incident resulted in temporary road closures, affecting both eastbound and westbound traffic between Honore Avenue and Arcadia Avenue.
The force of the water from the break caused significant damage to the road, resulting in a large hole at the site of the break.
