SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. – A distressing incident occurred on Sunday evening when a small child playing near a culvert was pulled into a drainage system due to a water main break.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, the break was reported just after 6 p.m. at 5433 Bahia Vista St.
The child was found approximately 100 yards west on Bahia Vista Street after being carried through the drainage system.
Emergency response was swift, with the Sarasota County Fire Department on the scene. The child was subsequently transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, though their condition is currently unknown.
In light of the incident, Bahia Vista Street has been closed to both eastbound and westbound traffic between Honore Avenue and Arcadia Avenue until further notice.
The Public Works Department is actively addressing the water main break, and motorists are advised to seek alternate routes.
